Penulisan
sebuah paragraf atau sebuah teks yang baik salah satunya ditandai dengan adanya
penggunaan kalimat pembuka dan kalimat penutup. Dalam bahasa Inggris, salah
satu cara membuat kalimat pembuka adalah dengan menambahkan / menggunakan prepositional phrase. Bagaimanakah
penggunaan serta contohnya? Berikut ini adalah penggunaann prepositional phrases dalam kalimat pembuka dan contohnya.
A. Penjelasan Prepositional Phrases dalam Kalimat Pembuka
Salah
satu cara untuk meningkatkan keahlian menulis dalam bahasa Inggris adalah
dengan cara memulai menulis sebuah kalimat pembuka menggunakan frasa kata depan
yang menunjukkan waktu dan tempat (prepositional
phrases of time and place).
Sebuah
paragraf dimna setiap kalimatnya memiliki bentuk subjek – kata kerja – objek
yang sama dapat membuat para pembaca menjadi bosan. Oleh karena itu, penggunaan
prepositional phrases ini dapat
membantu penulisan sebuah paragraf atau teks menjadi lebih bervariasi.
Hal
yang perlu diperhatikan dalam penggunaan prepositional
phrases dalam penulisan kalimat pembuka ini adalah dengan meletakkan tanda
koma (,) setelah prepositional phrases di
bagian awal kalimat.

Prepositional phrases ini dapat diletakkan baik di awal maupun di akhir kalimat. Kita juga dapat menambahkan kata there is / there are atau there was / there were dengan prepositional phrases di bagian awal kalimat.

Terkadang,
prepositional phrases hanya dapat
diganti tempat dengan sebuah subjek kalimat tersebut. Hal ini terjadi ketika
sebuah kalimat hanya berisi sebuah subjek, kata kerja intransitif (intransitive verb: a verb that has no object),
dan sebuah prepositional phrase. Jika
demikian, penggunaan tanda koma (,) tidak diperlukan.

B. Contoh Soal tentang Penggunaan Prepositional Phrases dalam Kalimat Pembuka
Identify
and underline all prepositional phrases of time and place. Then, add a comma
(,) after prepositional phrases of time and place that begin a sentence.
My Favorite Place
My favorite place on the
campus of our school is the lawn in the front of the library. I go there to
relax with friends during my lunch break. In the center of the lawn, there is a fountain. It is very
relaxing to see water splashes from the fountain onto some rocks around it. The
sound of the splashing water reminds me of a place in the mountains where we go
in the summer. Under a group of trees at the edge of the lawn are wooden
benches and tables. Students sit at the tables in the shade of the trees to eat
their lunches on warm days. The chatter of students makes studying impossible.
After lunch it becomes quite again.
